Queens Medical Centre is unfortunately experiencing a lot of staff absences throughout our clinical team due to illness. We are very aware that this is having a significant impact on the delivery of our services. We are extremely sorry for any inconvenience this may be causing patients, particularly those who may have been contacted on a number of occasions to have their appointments re-arranged. Staff are working hard to ensure you are informed and are prevented from making a wasted journey to the surgery. We are doing our best to maintain the levels of service our patients expect from us and would ask that you please bear with us and we would hope to resume normal service shortly.



If your contact details have changed, please can you update Reception with the correct details for mobile, landline and email address if you have one.  Can you also please ensure that you let Reception know if you are unhappy for us to text you.

Big Devon March challenges every workplace in Devon to walk

Big Devon March

This year, Active Devon has teamed up with the South West Coast Path for the 2018 walking challenge.

This National walking trail is 630 miles long. For every virtual mile walked during March, progress will be recorded online. There are incentives and prizes along the way to encourage sign ups.

Cold weather can be seriously bad for your health. That’s why it is important to look after yourself, especially during the winter. If you start to feel unwell, even if it's a cough or a cold, don't wait until it gets more serious. Seek advice from your pharmacist.

Flu is very infectious and spread by germs from coughs and sneezes, which can live on hands and surfaces for 24 hours. To reduce the risk of spreading flu:

• use tissues to trap germs when you cough or sneeze
• bin used tissues as quickly as possible
• wash your hands often with warm water and soap

Cancer care and support information in North Devon

Devon Libraries are working in partnership with the Peninsula Cancer Network, Macmillan, CAB, North Devon District Hospital and FORCE to offer a range of cancer information and support for people in North Devon. The libraries directly involved are Barnstaple, Bideford, Holsworthy and Ilfracombe.

These libraries all offer special book collections about cancer along with staff support when possible to access and use online information such as the Macmillan website and NHS Choices.

Letter to Boutport Medical Centre Patients

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR GP SURGERY

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

 

Dear Patient

 

Re: Boutport Medical Centre, Barnstaple

 

As many patients will be aware, we have been struggling for a while to recruit and retain doctors for the practice.

 

Having looked carefully at the options, we have now made the difficult decision to resign our contract with effect from 21 August 2017. At this point the three of us will be leaving and the premises will no longer be available.

 

The decision to give up our contract has not been easy, but followed a long period of reflection on the best way forward for all concerned.

 

However, we are pleased to say that agreement has been reached to make sure you continue to have a doctor and to benefit from good local care after that date.Boutport Medical Centre has been working with four neighbouring surgeries on a plan to sustain GP care in the town centre.

 

This has taken a little while to work through, but we are now in a position to tell you Queens Medical Centre is taking on all patients from Boutport Medical Centre by becoming partners on the GP contract from 30 June 2017. This will ensure that the transition for patients is as smooth as possible when we leave.

 

After 21 August, it will simply be a case of going to Queens Medical Centre rather than to Boutport Medical Centre, which will close. Appointments will be bookable in exactly the same way by calling 01271 372672.

 

As a patient, you won’t need to do anything else unless you want to register with a different practice.

 

NHS England, which is responsible for ensuring that people have access to GP services, fully supports this approach as the best answer in the circumstances.

 

With services transferring to Queens Medical Centre, patients will be able to see a range of GPs and other skilled staff in a modern, purpose-built healthcare facility with parking next door and good access for people with disabilities.

 

You’ll see several familiar faces, as many of our staff will be moving across the road to work at Queens Medical Centre.

We would like to invite you all to come along and see the practice, learn more about the services we have on offer and meet all of the team. What if I want to find another practice?

If you do not wish to automatically transfer to Queens Medical Centre, you may register at another GP practice to ensure continuity of care.

Open Letter to Patients, colleagues and Other Healthcare Agencies

 

The staff at Queens Medical Centre are delighted to announce the return of Dr Sinclair in April. Dr Sinclair told us ‘I am looking forward to returning to work and being part of the excellent team at QMC again and to provide the best care for our patients. I would also like to say that I have appreciated all the support I have received from the team and patients’.

 

We are also excited to be receiving a new full-time partner to the practice, who will be starting in July.

 

Dr Kalsi and Dr Holman, who continue to provide a high-quality service, understand the importance of continuity of care for their patients. They both recognise that the last months have seen a number of changes and would like to reassure their patients that the return of Dr Sinclair will provide stability. Drs Holman and Kalsi say ‘We value our patients and aim to provide the best service for them with their health at the centre of all that we do. We know that the change in appointment system that we undertook to cope with rising patient demand is proving to be very successful and we now do not have a waiting list for patients to speak to their Dr whereas previously some patients were experiencing many weeks wait to see their Dr. We feel this has to be better for our patients in the long term”.

Patient Compliment

So, any excuse to prove the media wrong! This is what we received from a grateful patient on Thursday. Patient and husband wanted to thank reception staff who dealt with her on wed afternoon-(her words) "if it wasn't for the reception staff quick thinking and immediate intervention she dreads to think what might have happened because she did have a stroke"

Receptionists, although not clinical, are asked by the GPs to ascertain some background information on symptoms so that the GPs are able to prioritise their phone list. They are also aware of `red flag' symptoms upon which they would act upon and inform the GP of urgency.

 

Access to Online Records

You are now able to request access to view your record online, this will show you:

  • Demographic data
  • Investigation results including numerical values and normal ranges
  • Problems/diagnoses
  • Procedure codes (medical and surgical) and codes in consultations (symptoms and signs)
  • Biological values (BP and PEFR)
  • Immunisations
  • Medication
  • Allergies and adverse reactions
  • Codes showing referrals made or letters received
  • Other codes (ethnicity, QOF)

Before registering for access to your records there are a few things to think about.  On very rare occasions:

  • Your GP may not think it in your best interest for you to look at your GP records online.  If this happens your GP will discuss their reason with you.  It is up to your GP to decide if you should be allowed access to your online records
  • You may see your test results before your doctor has spoken to you about them.  This may be when you cannot contact your surgery, or when your surgery is closed.  This mean you will need to wait until a telephone appointment is available to talk to your doctor.
  • Information in your medical records might need correcting.  If you find something you think is not correct, you should contact your surgery.  The staff will be able to answer your questions and set things right when needed.  Please bear in mind that you cannot change the record yourself.
  • There may be information in your medical records that you did not know was there or that you had forgotten about, such as an illness or an upsetting incident.  If you see anything you did no know about that worries you, please speak to your surgery and they will discuss this with you.
  • If you see someone else's information in your record, please log out immediately and let your surgery know as soon as possible.
  • If you have questions about any of the above points, please talk to your surgery and they will be able to advise you further.
